Shihan Jackie Chong

Shihan Jackie Chong is the younger son of Shihan Peter Chong. Currently hold a 5th Dan Black Belt and is the Dojo Chief instructor of Orchard Towers Dojo. JC was also one of the few members in Singapore attended the Uchi-deshi (live-in) training/programme in Honbu Tokyo/Japan and has more than 25 years of training.

JC started his training since 1975 in his young days at Haig Road Dojo. He was like other members training under his father (then Sensei), no compromise. As the headquarter (dojo) shift places, JC follows, to St. Francis Road dojo, then to Dunman Road dojo, and now Orchard Towers dojo.

In 1979, a young boy holding a 5th kyu (yellow belt), JC performed his first public demonstration/performance in his school, Tanjong Rhu Boys' School. While schooling, JC continue his training, then in December 1983 he took his Sho-dan grading (test). Soon after he obtained his Sho-dan, he assisted Ni-pin Sensei in Orchard Towers dojo.

In 1988, JC left Singapore to Tokyo/Japan Honbu for the Uchi-deshi training. From there (Honbu), he took his Ni-dan grading; he faces strong opponents like Masuda, Shichinhe and Midori. Not to fail his will, he completed and obtained his grade in Honbu. Uchideshi programme came short after he was to call back in Singapore for his National Service (Police-SPF). But before the call for NS, he represented Singapore in he 1st Commonwealth Tournament in Sydney/Australia with two other fighters.

After his national services, in 1991 JC took part in the National Selection Tournament for the 5th World Open Tournament; he was elected and move on representing Singapore for the World Tournament along with Sensei Patrick Teo and Sensei Buddhi. The following year (1992), JC participated in the local selection tournament in the light-weight division; again he was selected to represent Singapore in a team of 8 fighter for the Singapore International Weight Tournament held in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Soon after the tournament, JC left Singapore to Japan again for the Gekshuku (branch chief camp training) together with Sensei Carl Piva of Perth Australia (Sensei Carl was a Uchideshi under Shihan Peter Chong in Singapore). From there, JC obtained his San-dan (1992).

In 1994, JC represented Singapore as the coach cum team manger for the 6th Asia Open Tournament in Katmandu/Nepal. (Two of his member, Loke and Chico were among the 4 fighters representing Singapore). JC is also believed to be the first person in Asia outside Japan to know about Sosai Oyama death.

In 1996 JC attended the 7th Asia Open Tournament in Madras/India. He was there as the team manager and Sensei Patrick was the coach. (Again his member Senpai Yoji was in the team for Singapore).

In 1998, JC led A Team make up of Singapore, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for the 1st World Team Tournament in Paris/France. As a coach and manger for Asia, he learned a lot of admin skill in Kyokushin.

In year 1999, the 7th World Open Tournament was organized in Tokyo/Japan, again JC act as the Team manager. From the Refereeing Seminal for the World Tournament, JC obtained his IKO Referee certificate; JC is also the only member in Asia outside Japan being certified. After the tournament, the usual International Camp Training held in Mt. Mitsuime, JC took his Yon-dan under Kancho Matsui (Sosai Oyama's successor in IKO). (On the same time, Sensei Lam took his Ni-dan).

Year 2000, JC as the coach cum manager, represented Singapore to the 1st Liberation International Tournament held in Kuwait. With the experience taught by Shihan Peter Chong, in the same year, JC was invited to Philippine to co-organize the 8th Asia Open Tournament with the Branch Chief of Philippine Sensei Steven Foo. Many hard works done and successfully the tournament attracted more than 6000 crowd/fans packed in the Indoor Stadium.

Then in 2002 February, JC was invited by Kuwait for their 2nd Liberation international Tournament, again as a coach cum manager he brought along his member (Boon Kit) to participate in the tournament, after the tournament they attended their first time Desert Camp Training. In April the same year, JC left for Fukuoka/Kyushu-Japan as team official for the 9th Asia Open Tournament, and also attended the Mt. Hiko camp training. (There is always a camp training after a major tournament). With past experience as a coach cum manager, JC supposed to attend the 2nd World Team Tournament held in Sao Palau/Brazil as Asia Team coach cum manager in August the same year (2002), but had to give up the position due to Airline ticketing problems. (not solved yet)

Orchard Towers Dojo (Singapore Honbu) headquarter is located at 400 Orchard Road, rear block 7th floor (car park level). Under JC training, members would benefit their Karate skill, where they can gain from JC years of experience and technique.
